Yesterday evening, Quixey in Mountain View played host to the Silicon Valley Cloud Computing Meetup group. The topic, “Dynamic AWS cloud deployment, monitoring and optimization” is clearly one of great interest as over 350 people registered for the event. Sponsored by Cloudyn and Scalr, those attending the event enjoyed some great lightening speeches, pizza and in-depth session on cloud optimization delivered by industry experts.

How Salesforce gets the most bang out of every buck spent on AWS

Nate Lindstrom, Director of Network Operations at Salesforce spoke about how best practices for managing cloud deployment, security, scaling, tracking assets and much more.

New clouds, old challenges

Cloudyn’s very own Sharon Wagner also presented at the event and covered some classic IT problems faced by consumers of the new, cloud computing world. A few of the issues covered included:

  • 58% of IT runs unmanaged cloud applications
  • Cloud applications change every 2nd week
  • Nearly 13% of the configuration is changed in every release
  • Around 80% of instances are significantly (12%) underutilized
  • Customers report that 15% over-utilization causes 7% revenue loss

Many other facts and stats about Amazon cloud usage were discussed along with solutions for optimizing costs for Amazon EC2, S3 and other services. These and many other best practices that our customers have successfully used to optimize their cloud deployments can be viewed in the slides below.
